The PDD Memorial Quilt

In loving memory of all victims of Proventicular Dilatation Disease.

Remembering Rainbow... The Green Wing Macaw

Rainbow was a gentle, loving macaw. He came to live with me when he was 18 weeks old. He seemed hardly weaned in my opinion.

He didn't last long in the pet store because the day I saw him, I bought him. I had one wonderful healthy year with him. Then he became ill.

After he was diagnosed by a crop biopsy, he fought hard for what little time he had. After he was diagnosed and all the secondary infections and problems with PDD, the megabacteria and the yeast overgrowth were resolved, he lived and almost thrived for approximately five more months.

For the following four months of his life he declined. Megabacterial and yeast overgrowth infections became chronic. He suffered at least three separate yeast overgrowth and megabacterial infections in that time.

In the end, despite all the medications, his digestive tract shut down.

After a long brave fight, he succumbed to PDD. His loss is obscene. No creature on the planet deserves this disease. He was innocent. He was gentle and he was affectionate.

I have only pictures and my grief to remember him. It's a loss I don't accept with dignity. I'm angry. I'm outraged. I'm defeated. I didn't run from the battle. I fought the fight. My prayers and the prayers of many others went unheeded. I lost my dear little friend.

Rainbow, your loss is agonizing and your memory is precious. You broke many hearts when you left for your journey.
